Fingers crossed – book coming out next May

As it turns out, it takes a while to write a book, and then another few months to publish it.
I’m very excited today to tentatively announce that my book, which is tentatively entitled Weapons of Math Destruction: How Big Data Increases Inequality and Threatens Democracy, will be published in May 2016, in time to appear on summer reading lists and well before the election.
Fuck yeah! I’m so excited.

well, boo, hiss, frown… I took “next May” in your title to mean next month!! “May 2016” is too far off to even know if I’ll have any expendable money left for books by then.

I love your blog, Cathy, but please no, not “Weapons of Math Destruction”. The title is too apocalyptic and also too worn. It also reinforces the common view that the practice of math (and science) is a danger to society practiced by evil beings working secretly in dungeons.

what kind of math background is required to read it, and what kind of mathematics topics does the book talk about? what is the level of mathematical sophistication of the text? would it be appropriate as a text for an undergraduate course in a (lower-tier) math department? what about as a math course at harvard college?

The book requires no math at all. It’s being published by Random House for the general audience.

So I went back to the post in which you announced that you were writing a book–January of 2014–and that you hoped you’d be done by the following spring. I am unbelievably impressed that you did it on time, although of course never doubted you would.
