Strata data conference

August 31, 2011

So I’m giving a talk at this conference. I’m talking on Monday, September 19th, to business people, about how they should want to hire a data scientist (or even better, a team of data scientists) and how to go about hiring someone awesome.

Any suggestions?

And should I wear my new t-shirt when I’m giving my talk? Part of the proceeds of these sexy and funny data t-shirts goes to Data Without Borders! A great cause!

The tshirt rocks…I may have to do some shopping soon.

What a cool talk to give. I would show some example of where intuition or anecdotes leads you to one conclusion and then data reveals a different (‘right’) one. My recent one from my work was strategic defaults…all the rage in the press (dead beat non-mortgage payers) and then the SCF panel shows that on average the good American people pay their mortgage until they can’t (even way underwater)…lose job, bad health, etc. Now that I can point to that data, I no longer have to discuss the deadbeats. Though to be clear, a lot of these payers would probably be better off acting like economists.
