Students are in a game of chicken with colleges.

May 25, 2020

I’ve got a new Bloomberg column out today, about the game of chicken that colleges are playing with students and their parents:

Covid-19 Will Make Colleges Prove Their Worth

Online education should come at an online price.

Is there a way to read your articles without paying a subscription to Bloomberg?

I think if you sign up you get a few free articles per month. But no, it’s behind a paywall. It’s a business and that’s why I get paid. And I think the whole point is that they want you to pay to read my stuff. Sorry about that reality.

Of course, it’s a huge challenge to make enough of a swerve in the business model to compensate for a huge chunk of lost tuition. But there is no way around it, as you indicate. Either lower the tuition, or many students won’t show up, or both. You can start with a salary cut for the highest-paid administrators and faculty, but I’m not sure it will be enough. You can’t unbuild the expensive facilities which may be worthless for a couple of years. Not all colleges will survive.
