    This sort of thing shows how important single-payer universal health insurance is. Here in Japan, there’s no BS. Everyone’s covered, one’s premiums depend progressively on your income, and charges by medical providers are strictly controlled. The fine print is, of course, complicated, but it works well. Amazingly well. I’d be insane to move back to the US. I have quite a few MD acquaintances here, and despite being extremely conservative politically, they were horrified to hear that the US doesn’t have universal coverage. There’s no reason the US couldn’t do exactly the same thing if we wanted.
