I was interviewed by Tom Upchurch of Wired UK on a Hippocratic Oath for data science and ethics of AI (it’s long!):

“Fairness, equity and other social considerations need to be built into the algorithms. Until this is done, these secretive and unaudited algorithms will continue to make unfair, bias and discriminatory decisions, on a systemic level.”
Except that these do no exist in the current system of bureaucrats making arbitrary decisions. I know this because I’ve fought incorrect arbitrary decisions by bureaucrats on behalf of others and have had the decisions overturned, but many others just accept the bad decisions.
IMHO, the metric should be whether algos on average do better than bureaucrats.

Negotiated compromise between holding information arbitrageurs accountable and respecting their trade secrets? Good luck walking that tightrope. My bet is, history will be kinder to whistleblowers and other leakers, and reverse engineers and other hackers, than it will to auditors. I believe society can benefit from data science, but not from data science as a private industry. The problem is that the data are proprietary, not that the data scientists lack ethics.
