Time for One More

February 6, 2016

Hey if you haven’t read it yet take a look at this new blog, called Time for One More.

Gorgeous writing, and an inspiration for my new project on thinking about the elderly and technology.

I’m responding to your post after visiting your father in law in NL. I love Your observation about the need for technology to facilitate greater interaction with people who have loss of speech, hearing, touch and or sight. Hearing loss is such an isolating factor resulting in untold loneliness, depression and paranoia. You would be such a contribution to that field.

I don’t want to die alone, but I will. My father-in-law struggled all afternoon alone at the hospital. He didn’t die until his wife showed up telling him to go. Dad died alone even with all of us there. We had left the room.

Being the widow in whose arms her husband died, a beautiful moment, but a painful memory, was hard.

Even the well prepared widow finds that her circle of friends were not prepared to take his place. He didn’t want her to be alone, so right away she went looking for a new man. I was at a loss. I didn’t know what to do. I have to many rules. These days the rule is to say yes and enjoy the coming decade until her death. I’m ready for the next time I’m asked.

There is an email service for elderly people called “pawpaw mail.” It has features like
giant icons and lots of filtering, so people can just see the photos of their kids that they’re signing in to see. (A friend of mine started it so I’m partial to it.)
