Autobiography In Five Short Chapters by Portia Nelson

June 25, 2015

Chapter I

I walk down the street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I fall in.
I am lost… I am hopeless.
It isn’t my fault.
It takes forever to find a way out.

Chapter II

I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I pretend I don’t see it.
I fall in again.
I can’t believe I am in this same place.
But it isn’t my fault.
It still takes a long time to get out.

 Chapter III

I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I see it there.
I still fall in… it’s a habit… but,
my eyes are open.
I know where I am.
It is my fault.
I get out immediately.

 Chapter IV

I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I walk around it.

Chapter V

I walk down another street.

There is a “I’ve reduced it to Case I” joke in here somewhere.

I am hard-headed. I take no personal responsibility. And I am utterly unprepared for anything.

I am hard-headed. I take no personal responsibility. And I don’t learn after the first time. I am still unprepared.

I’ve made this mistake before. I’m beginning to learn. Perhaps if I alter my behavior this won’t happen again.

I will defend myself. I will take action. I am responsible.

I no longer cry over spilt milk. Rather, I put the glass in the middle of the table so I can’t knock it over to begin with. Some messes are best avoided rather than cleaned up after. I am responsible.
