Going to Haiti next week

November 5, 2014

I’m off to Haiti next week, for a week, with my buddie and bandmate Jamie Kingston. I was trying to figure out what to do with the blog while I was gone, and so I asked sometimes-guest blogger Becky Jaffe to cover for me (some of you may remember her Hip Hop’s Cambrian Explosion series which to this day gets traffic) but by the time I’d explained my trip, she’d decided to come along too! Which is awesome. We’re staying at the Hotel Oloffson in Port au Prince:

It has a room called "the Mick Jagger room".

It has a room called “the Mick Jagger room”.

So two things. First, if you know of fun stuff to do in the Port au Prince area, please tell me. I tend to like talking to people, and music and crafts, and Becky and Jamie are more into nature and insects.

Second, if you have a lovely or inspiring suggestion for what should happen to mathbabe next week while we’re away, please tell me!

Have a great trip. Give Mathbabe.org a vacation too.

We’ll miss you. But it’ll give us a chance to explore.

Have a great trip! While you’re there, read “Mountains Beyond Mountains” by Tracy Kidder, if you haven’t already. It’s about someone who loves Haiti and will make you feel better about what we humans are capable of.

far, far more importantly, who will fill in for you on the Slate Money Podcast (someone has to balance out Felix)? 😉
as for Mathbabe, see if Hillary Clinton or Elizabeth Warren will fill in for one week.

My friend Tom Adams is going to fill in, which is super exciting!

Haiti is the best, but try to get out of PaP if you can–that’s when things get *amazing*. I’m not sure how long you’re there, but if you have a can, try and get to Ile a Vache, its a fantastic little island off the coast. And a make sure to visit Galerie Monin it’s a fantastic art museum, though I’m not sure if it’s open right now. Are you going to Cap Haitian at all? if you do visit the fort its also great. Enjoy!
