Puzzle blog

Do you love puzzles like Sudoku? Check out Melon’s Puzzles. It’s a blog with lots of puzzles, including something new to me called Slitherlink (and lots of variations). Only go there if you have lots of time. It also gives you an insider’s view into puzzle contests. Only consider that if you have asstons of time.

Slitherlink is a wonderful, wonderful puzzle type – there’s a really surprising number of micro-theorems you can prove of the form “if we have these numbers and these lines / guaranteed empty spaces, then there must be a line/empty space here”. Every once in a while, I make an order from Amazon Japan largely for the purpose of picking more Nikoli puzzle books, especially Slitherlink. (I like their Nurikabe a lot, too: very soothing. And Masyu is quite nice.)

This is a link to the website for Culture Code, The Music, Vol.1, a new book about the music of our popular culture, with a twist. There’s an embedded puzzle. Clues are provided on the website and the answers are in the book. The first person to solve the code by linking all 200 bands in the book will win $5000. There’s a video book trailer which can be viewed on the website. Here’s the link: http://www.culturecodeonline.com. The book may appeal to music fans, but I think it will be a puzzle lover who will be the first to solve the code.
