My newest Bloomberg View column just came out:

Maybe we should just stop declaring war on stuff? We seem to be losing all of them.

Maybe if we understood the causes and worked skillfully to remove them we might be doing better. Our war on the planet will only have one end and the victor will not be us. Unless we wake up.

MS sufferers in England figured out more than a decade ago how to take opioids for as long as you need to without any risk of addiction. I learned about it from their blogs before a close friend of mine had to go on opioids for severe chronic pain.

Unfortunately, doctors mostly refuse to pay any attention, although to his credit Atul Gawande does explain it: https://www.vox.com/2017/9/8/16270370/atul-gawande-opioid-weeds

    To quote him:
“the goal is not zero pain — the goal is that you have enough pain that there will be an ache but you can do the things you want to do. You can sleep, you can eat, you can go shopping.”

The MS sufferers found that if they always made sure they had some pain — just took the edge off, but never went to zero pain —
    (1) they never developed tolerance — same dose kept working forever
    (2) they never developed any addiction symptoms

Oh, also — opioids don’t really work well for muscular pain, for some reason. Much more effective for other sorts of pain.

Unfortunately it’s been over a decade since I did this research, finding the blogs of the people who had direct experience. And the medical “profession” is just now barely beginning to learn what chronic pain sufferers figured out on their own over a decade ago, and posted on their blogs.

It leads me to have great disrespect for the medical “profession”. It’s not the first thing which has led me to have great disrespect for them and it’s not the most recent. Doctors simply can’t be trusted to *do the research*. If you have a medical condition and you’re smart and have a decent biology background, you are honestly better off researching it on the Internet than relying solely on “doctors”, simply because doctors are *not* doing the research (even though they certainly could do it better than you, they’re not doing it). And this has proven true too many times. It’s disturbing.
