I recently applied for a job at Oscar, the relatively new insurer that has had lots of subway ads around NYC. They are presenting themselves as a “techy” “disruptive” “startupy” insurance company, so clearly aimed at affluent millennials, who should be a healthy group by virtue of age and class. They in fact do have a healthier group of customers, and apparently due to some Obamacare regulation actually have to pay a fine of some sort because of this. Of course, the fine they had to pay was itself determined by some algorithm, so insurance companies still have plenty of room to try and game this algorithm.

Regarding the job, I did not even receive a form email saying they aren’t interested, which saves me from the moral conundrum of selling out to work for an industry that I hope will be made obsolete by universal health insurance.
