I’ve just about given up on finding common ground, myself. No one else seems to want to.
As you know from earlier discussions we’ve had, I’m politically left of center but am as interested as you are in getting beyond extreme polarization, which is what I think you’re talking about. But I may be less ambitious than you are, at least at the moment. You’re calling for finding common ground. But I would settle, at this point, for a bit more civility even when the folks discussing issues are disagreeing on almost everything they’re talking about. If people see those who disagree with them not as simply wrong or misguided but as enemies to be vanquished, I don’t think this bodes well for civil society. You and I might disagree on a lot of things but I suspect we’re in agreement on this point.
The Rise of the Right was not a popular, majority-driven revolution. It was subversion paid for by some of the wealthiest Americans in the world. Littlefingers Donald Trump was right when he said the election was rigged, but it wasn’t rigged against him. It was rigged to support anyone form the Republican Party running for president. The only reason that Putin got involved is because he owns Littlefingers.
For the 2016 election, was there one GOP candidate running for president that was a moderate Republican or even close to the center? The money from the 0.1 percent selected the candidates. Big money from the Alt-Right even flowed into the sewer pockets of Littlefingers.
There were several moderate Republicans in the race. Because of plurality voting, their support was split, eventually allowing Trump to reach the top of the ticket. Mainstream Republicans were for the most part appalled by Trump.
How many mainstreams Republicans are left, and how do we define mainstream today?
If the definition of mainstream means “the ideas, attitudes, or activities that are regarded as normal or conventional; the dominant trend in opinion, fashion, or the arts” then the evils of Trumpism may have become mainstream in the GOP because he won.
But Littlefingers Donald Trump now leads the NEW mainstream of the GOP, and those who think they are the old mainstream who don’t stand up to him have joined the new world order of Trumpism by default.
I refuse to characterize the current administration as mainstream. That would demonize most every Republican and lead to further polarization. Also, your ‘Littlefingers’ moniker for Trump is ad hominem and not even funny. There is so much important work to do. Why waste time name-calling, demonizing and polarizing? Who benefits from these seeds of political chaos?
I stick by the street name I have used for Donald Trump. Every gangster has a street name. His is Littlefingers. Here is my evidence that this malignant narcissist deserves a street name like Littlefingers. I refuse to treat this monster with respect. He deserves this ad hominem moniker. He earned it.

If Hillary spent a little more time addressing the concerns of the democratic base, and not just sucking up to big donors she might have won. IF she had selected Elizabeth Warren as her vice president you would have had the election in the bag, but selecting Warren for VP would offend HRC’s real base, which is Wall Street.
I wonder whether there is indeed a ‘rise of the right’. Maybe our democracy has once again been victimized by bad election processes such as the Electoral College, super-delegates, winner-take-all primaries, plurality voting, gerrymandering, restricted ballot access, unbridled campaign finance, etc. Meanwhile, we are necessarily preoccupied by Trump and none of these issues are being addressed.
