Leather stains on light colored hosiery

Occupy Summer School is going great! Hopefully today we’ll start a blog of some sort to document the goings on. And, as promised, I don’t have a lot of time.
However, I did want to share this with you, keeping in mind I have no idea how representative it is:
Quick question: how often did women of yore get leather stains on their light colored hosiery? Is that really a thing?

While it would be polite to imagine the stains came from riding sidesaddle, I imagine the less active explanation was crumbling, untreated leather upholstery in carriages. Hosiery maintenance is such a burden. (It might be too personal to suggest that sweat and footwear mingled to discolor.)

Phillip Merrill is probably correct, but I’d like to think it’s from riding only chap wearing ranch hands, when the husbands are out riding the range.

Sad how much of today’s political discourse (on both sides of the supposed divide) is a rehash of this maxim
I found the “80%” and “competition” arguments rather thought-provoking, though. There is a fundamental counterintuitiveness to the democratic process in that it seems to seek the common good by means of a competitive (to some extent, destructive) method in which different voices “annul” each other. That said, I’m not cherishing an illusion that this counterintuitiveness is the main reason why a lot of people are still not very fond of that process (and the annulment does not actually happen in a well-functioning democracy due to parties taking absorbing popular pieces of agenda from outside), but it is a thought worth thinking.

Not to be terribly boring–but as someone who wears both light-colored hosiery and leather shoes, I’m guessing that it refers to the stains that some dyed-leather shoes can leave on stockings, from normal wear.

Well, you can’t deny that it isn’t exactly wrong. You really *can’t* clean out a sink spout with a ballot! There’s no arguing with that one now is there?

White stockings and black boots. Very Victorian. Don’t think of ‘hosiery’ as modern nylon pantyhose. Think more like woolen kilt hose. Get it?
