Workplace Personality Test for the NY Fed

October 7, 2014

I’ve got a list of things to write about here on mathbabe, and they include the Carmen Segarra secret tapes as well as workplace personality tests. I’ve decided to do a mash-up just for fun, imagining what Carmen had to go through to get her job.

Update: you can send someone the link to this personality test here.

Also listened to This American Life NPR broadcast of the Carmen Segarra interview and secret tapes. Stunning reporting. Do you think her litigation has a chance? Is she employable elsewhere?

Not sure anyone is really interested in hearing the truth these days. I wish her well, she’s certainly quite brave. I’d love to have her come to my occupy group.

Kathy, that’s quite a downer: that you’re not sure anyone is really interested in hearing the truth these days. Perhaps a blog posting could clarify?

I’ve been going back and forth on whether to write a comment. Turns out, Matt Levine was kind enough to write a footnote that matches my views in the first footnote to this post: http://www.bloombergview.com/articles/2014-09-26/secret-fed-tapes-recorded-goldman-s-capital-game.

Beyond that, one thing remains clear to me: no regulator or manager is up to the task of properly supervising large, complex financial institutions. The range of issues, products, rules, data, models, and interaction between all of these are well outside the ability of almost anyone to oversee. While there might be a very small number of people able to do this, there is no credible reason to expect our selection processes to bring those people into the relevant positions of responsibility.

Where is our Marriner Eccles? Where is our Ferdinand Pecora?

And what is this about regulators supervising large financial institutions? We do not ask the Highway Patrol to supervise the manufacture of cars. Nor do we ask building inspectors to supervise construction.

As for asking managers to do so, I suspect that you are right, they are not capable of doing so. Which is why we pay them the big bucks. 😉
