Occupy Finance the book, coming out next Tuesday (#OWS)
September 11, 2013
Holy shit I’m just about bursting with pride to announce that my Occupy group’s book, Occupy Finance, is coming out Tuesday and is at the printer right now.
This is thanks in large part to all of you awesome people who sent contributions for the printing. You guys totally rock.
Our plan is to meet in Zuccotti Park Tuesday morning, September 17th, which is the 2nd anniversary of the occupation, give a wee press conference at 10am or so, and then hand out hundreds of copies of the book to whomever shows up.
Here’s the wrap-around cover to give you just a taste:
See you guys on Tuesday! The event is also on Facebook.
Nice wrap-around cover. Wish I could be there Tuesday. Before the meltdown it was clear to me that educating the general public on personal financial matters was of paramount importance and — so I thought — sufficient, but it’s now become obvious that the whole underlying financial system best be understood by everyone.

While I agree that knowledge about personal financial matters and the financial system itself can be helpful and individuals should seek to enlighten themselves, what we need (and won’t get, by the way) is a system that functions well even when virtually no one outside the industry knows anything. The shift from DB plans to DC plans, for example, has been catastrophically bad precisely because it demands a knowledge and a level of responsibility that people do not have the skills to attend to.
Congrats on the book, Cathy et al. i can’t wait to read it.

I think it’s best for those on DB that younger people on DC don’t understand it.
Otherwise they’d be like me – very pissed off.

How does one obtain the book if one is not in NYC or for that matter in the U.S.A.?

Great question! I’ll add this to the post, but once I have a book in hand I’ll go to the post office and figure out how much shipping costs, and I’ll ask people to send me enough $$ to cover the cost and of course their address.
Also, we are planning to make the pdf available as well as to self-publish on Amazon for a nominal fee (namely, the fee they insist on. We do not expect to make any money off of its sale).
Also, anyone who contributed to the cost of printing is also getting a copy. You know who you are.
Thanks for the support!

On any other day, but 9/11, I would have congratulated you. I think about the close to 3000 Americans murdered by Muslim terrorists, and I think about those sickened by the fallout, and those like my neighbor who ignored the advice of the Port Authority “mall cops” and continued fleeing downstairs, rather than going back up to meet their deaths. God bless America.
In case you wonder, I would have said the same about November 22, Two days for which I know exactly where I was when I heard the awful news.

When the Mathbabe blog can’t promote Occupy, the terrorists have won.

Weren’t the terrorists the original Occupy Wall Street?

It was, of course, a joke. Since I’m over here on the left coast and not in NYC I’m technically allowed to write them on 9-11.

Very Good, will give it a little press over at the Quack when the time gets closer, like Monday.

Cathy, got your book yesterday and am starting to read it. It looks like a lot of work and thought went into this and so far it’s been a great read. Will you have a PDF version? How can people send a donation?

Thanks!! The pdf version is available here. If you’d like to send a donation, which at this point means help me pay for sending copies to people by mail, then by all means please do! Send me an email and ask me for my address. My email is on my “About” page.
Thanks!
Cathy
