The Compliment Gang

January 22, 2013

Today I want to share a story with permission from my 10-year-old son.

There’s a bully in his school, a girl who is known to get other kids, boys and girls, together for the express purpose of choosing random victims and insulting them (his phrase is “dis”).

He claims to counteract this behavior by getting together his own posse of “nerd boys” and forming what he calls a compliment gang, where they essentially follow around the above dis gang and say things like, “Hey! I like your shoes!”.

He also enjoys challenging the ringleader to a dance-off, where he demonstrates absurd moves a la Chris Farley:

I love it! How wonderful of him to turn that other snot’s behavior around.

And how fun that he’s using a math concept to do it! (Compliment is sort of a double entendre here, right?)

    Thanks!

You must be so proud! My son is only one, but I’ll be delighted if he does things like this when bigger.

Your kid rules. Does he/his gang hire out his/their services? On certain days I could use a bunch of kids following me around showering me with compliments.

I really like your gang. How can I join?

Your wise son’s tactic reminds me of Michael Moore’s approach to Pastor Phelps. The Westboro Baptist Church under his leadership was infamous for attending the funerals of gay people who died of AIDS to celebrate their deaths and gay-bash one last time, carrying bullying over into the next life. In response Michael Moore formed a posse of gay men who showed up at these “God Hates Fags” protests in their pink Sodomobile and alternately tried to hug people or performed well-choreographed cheerleading maneuvers to enliven the spirits of those sourpusses.
