Johnson Research Labs
I have exciting news this morning.
I’ll be starting a new job next Monday at Johnson Research Labs (JRL). It’s made up of a small group of data scientists, social scientists, and cloud computing people working on interesting problems that will hopefully have a positive impact on the world. JRL was founded recently by David Park and John Johnson and is backed by Johnson.
My first job once I’m there will be to finish my book Doing Data Science with my co-author, Rachel Schutt, who is also joining JRL from Google. The book is based on Rachel’s data science class from last semester at Columbia which I blogged about here.
Ian Langmore and Daniel Krasner, who are co-teaching another class at Columbia this semester in applied data science (along with Chang She), are also working at JRL.
Talk about a power house! w00t! Wishing you all the greatest success for the common good.

Being a Big Pharma backroom PhD of course is completely different from your other endeavors :o)

I can understand your concern, but actually JRL is not associated with or affiliated to Johnson & Johnson, although you’re right that the backer is from that family.
And we haven’t actually done anything yet, so I also don’t want to exaggerate our potential.

Please disregard my premature comment! Not the right space for indignation with company green washing!

Not sure what “green washing” means in this context but I’m always happy to consider ways I’m being manipulated.

After actually looking up JLR I don’t either… “Premature” means that I didn’t follow your link to JLR (which BTW looks like a great initiative!) and narrow-mindedly confused Johnson Research Labs with Johnson&Johnson research labs. I guess what remains is “congratulations” on your new job. I am confident you found a place to make real difference.

I’m DISAPPOINTED Rachel Schutt is leaving Google. I’m sure Google is not too happy about that either.

Cool! But, um, when people ask what you do, are you sure you want to say “Johnson Research”?
(I’m guessing you’ll hear that joke frequently.)

Congratulations! Your new job sounds way greener than my new job: hauling fresh produce thousands of miles in 18-wheelers (actually I just take the produce a few hundred miles from CA to AZ, then other drivers take it the rest of the way to places like Ohio and Connecticut).
For anybody like me who may have missed Tom Allen’s joke above (initially I thought he might be referring to “Masters and Johnson Research” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Masters_and_Johnson), it’s based on the slang definition of the word “johnson”.

While I don’t have any jokes about johnsons, I do have a question… is Johnson Research Labs a new startup? Are you building a company from the ground up?
